Meet Prossy, Doors’ Human Resources Manager

Meet Prossy, Doors’ Human Resources Manager

Prossy joined the Doors Ministries team in 2015 as a teacher and Ministry Arm leader of the former Doors Mission School. She was responsible for the implementation of the homeschool curriculum with all of our children living in the homes at the time. At the beginning of 2018 when the Doors Mission School closed and children transitioned to other schools, her character and work ethic earned her the promotion of Human Resource Manager becoming Peter’s right hand in ministry administration; a role she has thrived in.

Prossy has chosen to stand with Doors in this transition, volunteering her time and talents for the glory of God, because she believes in the mission of Doors. “I love Doors because it is a Christian organization with a clear vision to awaken the wild love of Jesus through discipleship. It has always been my heart’s desire to work with children such as those in Doors.” We are grateful that Prossy has chosen to invest her talents at Doors these past 4 years, and will continue to do so in the years to come.

“I would like to pass on our sincere gratitude to all sponsors that have stood with us in season and out of season. We do appreciate you. May God bless you.” –Prossy, to supporters and partners of Doors

Discipleship Programs at Doors Today

Though Doors is changing, we remain committed to the vision of discipleship and building up the leaders of the next generation in Uganda. Throughout the past 6 years, this has continued to evolve at Doors…What does it look like today??

Currently, we are focused on building disciples in 5 ministry arms: Doors Primary School, Secondary School Scholarships, Vocational Training Scholarships, Street Outreach, and Street Child Rehabilitation & Resettlement. How is discipleship carried out in each of these? Read more below to find out…

Doors Primary School:
Over 100 impoverished children from the Namuwongo slum of Kampala attend Doors Primary School (DPS). The school opened in 2012 as a means to care for families and children living in extreme poverty, and prevent such at-risk children from running to dangerous street life, a temptation many children in these circumstances face. DPS is unique from other schools in that we focus on the child’s holistic well-being, not solely their academic success. Each child is cared for spiritually through Christian teaching, daily chapels, Bible studies and Christ-focused materials; physically through a well-balanced menu targeted at the research-based nutritional needs of the children, PE classes, and an on-site nurse’s office that treats basic medical problems with the ability to refer out for more complex cases; emotionally through weekly counseling sessions available to all students and an on-site social worker who regularly follows up with families at the school in distress; and academically by providing top-notch education proven by our 100% pass rate of the Primary Leaving Exam (a national exam) and tutoring for students who have fallen behind or are struggling to keep up in class.
We are looking for 100 monthly sponsors at $37/month to partner with each of these individual students to keep Doors Primary School open and allow these children’s education to continue.

Secondary School Scholarships:
Doors Primary School has had 18 students graduate since its formation. Each of these students scored high enough on the national Primary Leaving Exam, qualifying them for entrance into secondary school. The challenge faced by these students upon their graduation from primary school is affording the expensive school fees of quality secondary schools. For each of these teenagers, opportunity to attend secondary school would be life changing and grant them opportunity to break the cycle of extreme poverty in their families. Offering these students a scholarship to secondary school is like offering them a chance to fight for a better future for their families and equipping them to stand up for the injustices of poverty in Uganda.
We are looking for 18 monthly sponsors at $80/month to partner with each of these individual students to allow them to remain in school. Currently we are unable to offer any scholarships to any of these young men and women.

Vocational Training Scholarships:
More than 50% of Ugandans are unemployed, many of these holding a college degree. The percentage of unemployment among Ugandans with Vocational Training Certificates is much lower. Many of our young adults who have graduated out of other Doors programs (Doors Primary School, partially of Secondary School Scholarship, and other former programs including Doors Mission School) have opted to pursue vocational school certificates opposed to other forms of higher education. These programs equip young adults to start their own businesses or apply for jobs as electricians, car mechanics, tailors, nurse assistants, and more.
We are looking for 3 monthly sponsors at $80/month to partner with three young men and women desiring to pursue these degrees. Currently we are unable to offer any scholarships to these young men and women.

Street Outreach:
Thousands of children run to the streets of Kampala every year in Uganda to escape the hardships of home life. For some, they have been abandoned or orphaned, others faced abusive situations at home, even others see the lacking at home due to poverty and are tempted by the illusion of city life…regardless of reason, any child who runs to Kampala finds life on the streets to be harsh and dangerous. Temptations of drugs and alcohol to escape the realities of the hard life are strong, succumbing too many children to the power of these vices. Many suffer from depression and commit suicide, others are trafficked due to their vulnerability, and all feel the pains of hunger and abuse. Two times a month, our team of staff and volunteers head to the slums of Kampala to spend time with just a handful of these children to offer them the words of hope and comfort found in the Gospel. We couple this with fresh food, games, and other activities to help these children escape the harshness of their situation if even for a couple of hours. This program also offers an open door for God to lead us to specific children that He would have us enroll in the Street Child Rehabilitation & Resettlement program, or connect to other ministries working with street children throughout Kampala.
We are looking for 3 monthly sponsors at $40/month to allow the continuation and potential growth of this program.

Street Child Rehabilitation & Resettlement:
Doors sees the needs of each individual child. Whenever God leads us to a particular child living on the streets through Street Outreach or referrals of other organizations, our team of social workers prayerfully work with the child to see the best way forward for the child. For some children, resettlement into their biological family is the best option. In other cases, the child’s home situation is unsafe or nonexistent, thus Doors partners with families in Kampala who have a desire to foster children in need of a Christian family. Children formerly living on the streets undergo counseling and a time of rehabilitation, and are then placed either back in their biological family after reconciliation, or in a loving foster home. In both scenarios, we ensure that the child will be able to experience the love of God, healing from their pasts, and freedom to grow in their gifts, talents and passions. Families are then given assistance to keep these children in school and pursuing dreams and a better future.
We praise God for placement of 5 children in families thanks to the support of monthly sponsors. We are looking for 4 more monthly sponsors at $80/month to assist other children on our immediate needs lists to find a loving home environment and get back in school.

Meet our Director, Opio Peter

Peter has worked at Doors Ministries for the past 5 years. He was brought on staff originally as an Uncle (house parent) in the Doors Boys’ Home. His faithful dedication to the children and incredible social work skills quickly earned him promotions in the ministry. He moved from Home Uncle to Doors Home Administrator to Ministry Social Worker, to finally now, Director (since March 2017).

He believes in the future of Doors because of a God-given dream he had even before this transition took place. He dreamt that the organization was facing a decision and closing; that finances became too strained to continue operating and the future of Doors in Uganda was in jeopardy. In his dream he remembers thinking, “This ministry is meant to support and help children in need. God I know you will make a way when there seems to be no way. I will stand.” In the dream, Peter saw the ministry grow into a very powerful and great organization that helped many neglected children on the streets and in impoverished communities.” Doors praises God that Peter has indeed stood with Doors Ministries. We believe this dream was God-given to prepare Peter for the role he now finds himself in through this transition.

According to Peter, he is dedicated to see “Doors transform the lives of vulnerable children and former street children into future leaders.”

“Thank you for loving and supporting these neglected children and restoring hope for a better future with God.” -Peter, to all Doors supporters and partners

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

Friends of Doors:

It’s TIME for us to make our big announcement! Doors has undergone a major transition…we are now a solely Uganda-based organization!

Due to some challenges on the US non-profit side of Doors Ministries, and the continual growth of Doors in Uganda, we have made the decision to become a solely Uganda-based organization. We began making this transition near the beginning of the year and are nearly complete.

Just over 6 years ago, our Founders began casting God-sized vision over the new baby organization of Doors Ministries. At that time, Doors was just a rehabilitative home for former street boys. This was before the addition of Doors Primary School and every other program now run with the vision of discipleship through Doors. Our Founders dreamed that one day the entire organization and vision they had for Doors and for the boys in the home would be passed onto to Ugandans passionate about God’s kingdom and passionate about discipleship. This transition fulfills that vision.

Doors Ministries is now fully Ugandan led. Our Director, Peter, has taken the torch of Doors and is leading the ministry into the next season of growth and vision casting. He has a strong team around him. He has worked with Doors for over 4 years, beginning as an uncle in the former Doors Boys’ Home himself. He is the man God has appointed to lead for this time and for His purposes. We are grateful for his vision, his passion, his enduring faith, his gifts and talents, and his commitment to Doors. We look forward to the fruit that will grow and the seeds that will be planted by God’s grace under his leadership.

Opio Peter, Doors Ministries Director since March 2017

With this decision to transition, came the hurdle of figuring out the best way for international donors and financial partners, yourself included, to continue supporting and connecting with Doors in Uganda. We prayed and sought direction, and the Lord provided an awesome opportunity for us through Allegro Organizational Solutions. Allegro is a US-based team of non-profit experts who serve charitable initiatives by managing the administrative, financial, and legal tasks, so that charities can focus on their vision.

With this partnership, Allegro will now take on all administrative tasks for Doors, and allow our donors to give directly to Doors in Uganda  through their organization. Allegro is a US non-profit, thus all funds donated to Doors through Allegro will be tax deductible. Of course, the organization does take an overhead charge in order to compensate for the services they are providing. We believe this charge is well worth for what they will be providing for Doors, including wire transfers into our Ugandan bank account.

To donate to Doors from now on, you have many reliable options for giving. You can mail a check payable to Allegro Solutions (with our account designation code DoorsMinistries.001 included on the memo line), call Allegro and set up a credit card or direct bank transfer over the phone (reach Allegro at 713-874-1519), or give online by going to https://allegrosolutions.org/donate/DoorsMinistries001. Online, you are now able to give through credit card, PayPal, or an electronic bank transfer. We recommend an electronic bank transfer as it has the lowest overhead charge incurred allowing more of your money given to go directly to Doors and the work being done. To set up a recurring donation, simply click on the “recurring” icon opposed to the “1x” default icon. Please let us know if you have any questions about how to set up your account, where exactly your money goes, or about these changes at Doors. You can send a note through this site, or email our sponsorship coordinator, Ashley Lammers, at Ashley@doorsministries.org. We are very happy to explain everything in full to you.

We praise God for His continual provision and blessing on Doors Ministries, and we are so grateful for your support in the past and now.
